Essential Oils That Can Help with Hair Growth

Thinning and loss of hair are some of the trickiest and most prevalent issues people face as they grow older. It’s well established by this point that the majority of men will experience some hair loss by the time they reach their mid-30s, if not sooner. Women experience the problem too, however, with a Washington Post article having suggested last year that about 30 million American women suffer from purely hereditary hair loss (as compared to 50 million men).

Most often, hair loss is not a health issue in the sense that it does not, in and of itself, cause any sort of illness or bodily harm. However, hair loss can lead to stress and anxiety, a loss of self-confidence, and other, similar issues — which is ultimately why so many people look for ways to take control of it!

Unfortunately, we don’t yet have a “magic bullet” for hair loss or thinning. The closest thing may be minoxidil, which was described in a recent article on SymptomFind as a treatment that “helps to restore balding or thinning hair” and is safe to use “as a long-term method of combatting thinning hair.” Minoxidil is essentially Rogaine and is the most well-known way to address hair loss.

The problem with minoxidil is that it doesn’t work for everyone, and it can have unpleasant side effects (such as lowered blood pressure, fainting, or sexual performance issues in men). This is generally the case with some other drug-based remedies as well, and it’s why many ultimately seek out more natural solutions to hair thinning or loss.

To be clear from the start, none of these are miracle cures or magic bullets either. Again, such a thing does not exist where hair loss is concerned. Scientific research regarding the use of essential oils tends to be minimal at this point. That said, there are some oils that people claim regularly to have had success with — such as the following:

Peppermint Oil

There’s limited evidence of peppermint oil’s effectiveness, save for studies that showed it did improve follicle depth and volume in mice. Some have found it effective though, and it’s relatively simple to try. Just a few drops of peppermint essential oil worked into a carrier oil or even your shampoo can be applied to the scalp and left there for 5 or 10 minutes once a day. Barring an allergic reaction it can’t hurt, and some even find that it causes a pleasant, cool sensation.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is also called "liquid gold" in Morocco, the Argan tree's native region. Locals use it for cooking, as well as healing ailments, and beautifying themselves, making it an important part of their daily lives. Argan oil contains fatty acids and powerful antioxidants like vitamin E, which are proven to be beneficial for the scalp and hair. These nutrients moisturize your hair and protect it from damaged caused by the sun, styling, and free radicals. As for the scalp, argan oil can prevent or improve conditions that cause hair loss, such as psoriasis. Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil has arguably generated the most buzz out of any natural remedies for hair loss. A study in the Journal of Dermatology Research and Therapy compared minoxidil, an FDA-approved OTC hair loss drug, to other products, including rosemary oil. It found that rosemary oil had similar effects as minoxidil after six months of use. As with minoxidil, rosemary oil can improve blood circulation, which leads to the regeneration of follicles. To give it a try, follow the same general process described for peppermint and lavender oil, and apply it two or three times each week.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin seed oil is a fascinating option, because like rosemary oil it has been tested in humans with some encouraging results. Men with what’s known as “male-pattern baldness” re-grew more hair on pumpkin seed oil during this study than their counterparts did with a placebo. The issue was that pumpkin seed oil was merely the main ingredient in a more complex solution — which makes it impossible to conclude from this study that pumpkin seed oil alone leads to hair growth. Nevertheless, it’s another oil with potential that some have had success with.

For those who want to address their hair health and volume without resorting to drug treatments, the oils above are some of the potential remedies worth exploring first. However, Stephanie White also reminds people that other factors such as stress and diet can also cause hair loss. So a great way to encourage hair growth is to live a healthy lifestyle while also trying essential oil treatments.
