Lock & Mane on Betty Confidential

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

We heart gossip blogger extraordinaire Micah Jesse. Not only doesn’t he mind slinging back a martini in a beer glass with us every once in awhile but he has a fantabulous sense of style. That’s probably why those pretty bitches over at Betty Confidential asked him for his Red Carpet Dos and Don’ts.

We couldn’t agree more with the Georgia Peach about the dilemma of white deodorant stains and then general horror that is body glitter.

And we feel strongly about his suggestions when it comes to hair!

I know, I know the summer can be hot, and even worse, humid. But that’s no excuse for stepping out with a frizzy head of hair. I suggest using a product like Frizz Ease or slicking back your hair into a tight ponytail if you think your locks are are going to turn into a Lion’s mane. Speaking of manes, you can pick up lots of luscious products for your hair at Lock & Mane.

Thanks for the love, my love. Can’t wait to see you for fashion week!

Lock & Mane Shines on Yahoo Shine

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

It seems everyone is doing a story on how to makeover your look these days, what with the change of season and all. Lock & Mane is very happy to chime in on such things since all we want is for everyone to have a lovely hair day, every single day.

We really thought this over when Yahoo Shine (Yahoo’s fab new site for ladies…if you haven’t checked them out make sure to soon) asked us what hair looks we thought needed to be updated. Of course we came right back to our biggest pet peeve of all…too long locks!! For the whole piece click here. But here is what we had to say:

Sign you need an update: You cling to long hair because you think it makes you look younger.

How to revamp: “One of the most common hairstyle mistakes I see on both celebrities and everyday women is overgrown hair,” says Jackie Cascarano, creative director at Lock & Mane, a hair products company and website, www.lockandmane.com. “Styles that are too long make your locks look unhealthy and ultra fine. Trimming your locks with frequency improves the appearance of your hair by making it look thicker and healthier at the ends.” Just look at the popularity of the short bob and pixie haircuts in Hollywood if you’re not so sure about a shorter cut, Cascarano says: “Women think long hair will keep them looking younger but the truth is that a well maintained, shorter style” can make you look younger.

AOL’s That’s Fit Gets Your Hair Out of Your Face!!!

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

You want to rock some sexy bangs but they’re a serious pain in the booty when you’re trying to get your workout on. Plus there’s always the gym-to-work dilemma…how do you make your hair look good when it’s 20 minutes from shower to office?

Thankfully the lovely locked Kristen Seymour over at AOL’s premiere fitness site “That’s Fit” took to the field to examine our haircessory options for the gym and beyond. We love that Kristen included Ban.do’s Heart L headband in her roundup. We love the band just as much as she does. In fact we did 40 minutes on the elliptical in it and then hit the sauna just the other day (yeah, we accessorize while we steam!). Here’s what Kristen had to say:

If your day calls for something a little more professional and polished, you can’t go wrong with Ban.do’s Heart L headband ($35, Lock & Mane). The beaded peacock feather gives it a little edge, but the colors are low key enough that you can totally sport it at the office. Plus, it works equally well with a sleek pony, a frizzy bun or loose hair.

Dr. Reed Talks Women’s Hair Loss With StyleList

Monday, August 16th, 2010

We love having Dr. Michael Lorin Reed as our resident medical consultant. When our hair woes reach a level of concern he is always available with wise counsel. Last week StyleList’s Deborah Dunham picked his brain about women’s hair loss and the reasons why women’s hair falls out. Here’s what they chatted about:

“Men like to have hair. Women have to have hair,” said Dr. Michael Reed, a Manhattan-based dermatologist, director of the NYU hair loss clinic and the NYU hair transplant clinic and author of “Women’s Hair Loss: The Hidden Epidemic”.

“Hair loss in women appears to be more prevalent and occurring at an earlier age,” said Reed. “Women today are assuming more roles that used to be male roles (like working full time) and the stress from this can cause male hormone levels to increase which could increase hair loss.”

Reed told StyleList that although there are many types of hair loss in women, most patients have one (or a combination) of the “Big Three” conditions:

Female Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)

This type of hair loss is genetic and can be seen any time after puberty with an increasing occurrence as we age. In fact, 50 percent of all women will suffer from this form of hair loss at some point in their lives, most notably after the age of 40. While this condition may be pre-determined in our genes, certain factors such as stress, medications, the pill or hormones can jump-start the thinning process.

Telogen Effluvium (Physiologic Shedding)

Mainly seen in women, this type of hair loss is typically related to an underlying cause versus genetics. An excessive number of hair follicles can suddenly stop growing due to pregnancy, illness or surgery. It can also be caused by hormonal shifts, anemia or a thyroid imbalance.

Alopecia Areata (Allergic Alopecia)

This condition is characterized by the appearance of patchy “bald spots”. It can be caused by an allergic reaction within the body or an immune system imbalance. It may be limited and disappear without any treatment, or it may be widespread.

What do you think of this article? Do you still have questions about women’s hair loss? You can always email us or just pick up a copy of Dr. Reed’s “Women’s Hair Loss, The Hidden Epidemic.”
