March Makeovers!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We are dedicating the whole month of March to makeovers. Why? Because Spring is about to be sprung and your closet isn’t the only thing that needs a good cleaning!  Throughout the month, Lock & Mane will host different makeover contests. Some are for the ladies and some are for the dudes.

To enter, send in a picture of you (or your spouse/ boyfriend/girlfriend’s) unfortunate hair.  We choose the one most in need of help and send you a customized Lock & Mane gift basket of goodies to solve all of your hair problems!

The catch of course is that we want to see an After picture to see how it all worked out.  We like closure.  See, for example, the before and after of Hammy the Wheaten Terrier above.  The After picture makes us happy.

So stay tuned, we’ll be announcing our first March Makeover contest next week!!!  Help us  help you. xoxo

Alice in Wonderland Premiere: Yawn.

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland premiered yesterday in rainy London. And the looks were a tad mellow for such a wacky movie.  In fact, we would call the styles overall quite BORING. Nice… lovely… but boring. With the exception of Avril Lavigne, who normally irritates us but at she least brought some personality to the red carpet. So thanks Avril.

Check out Anne Hathaway’s straight shoulder-length ‘do.  It’s sleek, neat and pretty.  But boring.  Sorry. The rain may have been an impediment to an overly coiffed style for Miss Annie.  It looks quite pretty but a bit flat.  In other news, she has such flawless skin. Swoon!

To keep hair from becoming flat (even on soggy London bad-hair days), try Rene Furterer’s Volumea line, which includes a shampoo, leave-in detangling spray and a no-rinse foam.  Style as you see fit (we say rock some waves and texture!) and spray with Jonathan’s Finish Control High Shine Flexible Hairspray, which adds shine and body while holding  the look. Perfection.

Then there’s Avril, who wrote the title song for the film.  Her hair is incredibly intense: Messy, matted, almost dread-locked with black streaks.  You know what? We like it. Go Avril for adding some flair to the premiere!  This ‘do is a tad risky but if you want to attempt a dreaded, matted look like this, you know we love our texturizing sprays, like Jonathan’s Spray Dirt Texture Hold Hairspray.

And of course Alice herself, Mia Wasikowska, is sporting the hottest new ‘do of the season: the pixie cut.  Very simple and chic.  And very understated for a premiere.  Admittedly, she’s rocking an incredibly intricate Valentino gown, so it makes sense that she would be simple with both the  hair and makeup.

We’ve been loving these pixie cuts these days.  She and Carey Mulligan (and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt!) are leading the pack with this beautiful look.  For maintenance of a low-key red carpet pixie like Mia’s, we recommend Cutler’s definition cream for texture and shine.

What do you think of these looks?

How do you solve a problem like Maria’s bad hair?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

We love CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo. Really, we do.  There’s nothing cooler than a beautiful lady who knows finance.  But as we were tuning into Closing Bell this afternoon (what, you think we only watch E! and VH1?) we witnessed a hair travesty.

Did a 5-year old with a bleach-brush attack Maria in her sleep? This is no good. There is dark brown hair and light blonde hair on the same head. No good at all.

Mane on Main: The Leto-Hawk

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Dude looks like a lady or lady looks like a dude?  It’s worse than we feared, kids.  The Leto-hawk is gaining momentum. Lock & Mane blog lover Sandy saw this manhawk on a pretty lady outside a Soho Starbucks earlier this week.  Maybe Jared is looking for a hair soul mate?

Don’t forget to send your  Mane on Main pics to christina@lockandmane.com!  xoxo

Tiger’s Mistresses: Who Has The Best Hair?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

We’ve been waiting for the Tiger Woods story to fizzle for weeks now. Since that just doesn’t seem to be happening our minds have wandered away from the narrative of scandal and salaciousness into the heady topic of hair.  Namely which of these baker’s dozen of mistresses has the best hair. This is no doubt a VIT (very.important.topic).

They’re all pretty similar in that the hair is typically long and layered and mistress-like. A standout for us was former porn star Joslyn James in an upsetting red wig. Sharon Osbourne looked good with this hair style. Joslyn James did not. It looked as if a calico cat died on her head. Tiger should want to apologize to her just because he created a situation where she would appear on television in that thing.

Mindy Lawton served as a poster lady for curly headed girls with her ‘do straight out of 1992: curls, gel and a halfup style. To update that antiquated ‘do we would give Mindy some texturizing cream and a good gloss. Let your curls live their life, Mindy.

There’s a subgroup of mistresses that we like to call the over-processed blondes. Yes, Jamie Jungers, you are are their president. But Loredana Jolie you’re the vice-president.

Jaimee Grubbs (you’ll remember her as the girl who gave up all the sassy details to US Weekly) isn’t sure whether she is blonde or brunette, but she needs to pick one and also update her roots. We can send over an Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore pen.

We have to give props to unwilling mistress number one, Rachel Uchitel (pictured at top). She has some long locks, but they’re well manicured, highlighted and simply lovely. She clearly wins for best hair. And, frankly, we would like to see more of it on her correspondent gig with Extra!

p.s. Want more L&M?  Of course you do!
