Lock & Mane

Ponytails weren’t just fashion forward on the Golden Globes red carpet, they were the most practical option in all that rain!  We loved the loosey-tails on Olivia Wilde and Sofia Vergara and the high and tight ponies on Mo’Nique, Heather Graham and Giuliana Rancic.

The key to the picture perfect pony is a good blow dry.  A good blowout provides the foundation to shape hair into either the high and tight pony or the loosey-tail.

So! Start out with a serious blowdryer like the Diamond Titanium Dryer from BaByliss (which powerful yet gentle on your locks  and features sparkly Swarovski crystals!).  If you have fine hair in need of some lift, try flipping hair over the head while drying and using a Tuxedo Pro Round brush for volume.  If you’re looking for a sleeker look, blowdry with a paddle brush pointing the nozzle down onto your locks.

For the high and tight pony: After hair is dry, gather the top section and pin back. Gather the rest of the hair into a high ponytail. Grab a one to two inch section of hair and wrap around the base of the ponytail; secure with pretty bobbies from Sylvia Benson underneath the tail. Finish with Jonathan’s High Shine Flexible hairspray. The high-up, sleek ponytail highlights your cheekbones…so if you’re proud of them, flaunt them like Olivia! You’ll also need some intense shine serum for this look– try one of our faves, the Oscar Blandi’s Olio di Jasmine Hair Serum, which will also help with frizzies if it should drizzle on your red carpet!

For the loosey-tail: After hair is dry, tease the roots with a fine tooth comb from Mason Pearson to add volume and then spray hair with Oscar Blandi’s Wave Enhance spray. This is particularly great for gals who already have wavy or curly hair. For you ladies with straight hair, you’ll probably need the help of a 1.25″ or 1.5″ curling iron.  Gather hair into a low loosey-tail and secure with an adorable pony holder like Jennifer Oulette’s satin tie with feathers.   You look like a star already!
