L&M Holiday Gift Ideas!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

junior-with-bowHello lovelies! Can you believe the holidays are here already? It seems like just yesterday we were discussing how to get the Mad Men look for Halloween, and now here we are on the brink of holiday madness. If you are anything like us, you tend to delay-delay-delay buying presents until the last minute! Well, to help all of you out there (and ourselves) avoid procrastination, we’re posting gift ideas throughout the month.

Here’s gift idea #1: The incomparable Mason Pearson. We already did a lengthy blog post on this product, so you know how much we love these things. Also note that Marie Claire Magazine just included the MP in December’s “Best Products of All Time” list. Not too shabby. A Mason Pearson makes a great gift because it’s absolutely decadent (your recipient will feel oh-so-special and pampered) but also incredibly utilitarian. They last forever. In fact, we’ve been getting tons of feedback from our Twitter friends telling us how long they’ve had their MP’s. This brush is a favorite among hairstylists and everyday hair-lovers and it’s available in a variety of sizes/prices.

Stay tuned to the Lock & Mane blog for gift ideas and inspirations throughout the month of December!

L&M Chats with Headwear Maven, Jennifer Behr!

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

jen_behr_serious_mg_0145What we find inspiring about Jennifer Behr is her dedication to old fashioned handiwork and craftsmanship that goes into each of her delicate and finely made headpieces. Her headbands and wraps are favorites of Hollywood’s hottest starlets like Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Katy Perry and Heidi Klum. We could go on and on about Ms. Behr, but you will probably enjoy it more if we just let her tell her story in her own words.

Lock & Mane: Tell us a little bit about how you started out in the business. You weren’t always a master hairpiece sculptor were you?

Jennifer Behr: Well, I went to school for sculpture and art history and I did hats when I first got out of school. Let me tell you the hat market is a small industry and a small market because not a lot of people in the United States wear them.

L&M: Yes, yes the British are much more into hats (sigh!). So the market for hats was weak. Where did you go from there?

JB: I started working on accessories for Frederic Fekkai and I thought that I wanted to work on handbags. I did the accessories program at FIT and I loved accessories. At Fekkai we had everything produced in Italy.

solid-jet-padded-headbandL&M: That seems totally different to what you do now.

JB: Right. Now all of my products are hand-made in NYC. Everything is done in the city.

L&M: That’s admirable considering that most designers are being pushed out of the NYC Garment District right now.

JB: Well it’s a very expensive place to do business. But I live here and I love it and I am committed to doing it here. We work in a small space and there isn’t much space but it is important to me to stay in New York.

L&M: You always say that it is also important to you that everything is hand-made. Why?

crystal-wing-thin-headwrapJB: Think about some of our crystal pieces. Those need to really fit your head for them to work and to do that they have to be handmade. Sure it costs us more to make each piece but at the end of the day we make a beautiful object that will last for a long time. It is so much more than a fashion accessory that is going to fall apart after you wear it a couple of times.

L&M: What inspires you?

JB: I often start the collection thinking about what I want to wear. I think the wonderful thing about women designing for women is you start with what you love. I go through the Garment District and search for new materials and find things that I think are really beautiful.

L&M: What is in the works for Jennifer Behr?

JB: For the first time in two years we are launching a totally new bridal collection and that’s really exciting. We are thinking about doing belts and we are starting to do some jewelry. We don’t think the jewelry is a stretch because what we do now is jewelry for the head.

L&M: You pieces have been prominently displayed on one of L&M’s favorite shows, “Gossip Girl.” Do you know beforehand that your pieces will be on Leighton Meester’s locks?

JB: Sometimes they email us beforehand and say “watch this week” and sometimes I’ll watch and I’ll be like “that looks familiar, ohmygosh that’s mine.” The thing that has been amazing about “Gossip Girl” is that it has made people realize that they look great wearing accessories on their head. There are so many shows out there where people don’t do anything aspirational and GG has people wearing fun things that the viewers can interpret into their own styles.

Are You Tough Enough?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

toughI’ll be honest. As a man, the word “product” never crossed my mind or came out of my mouth for the larger part of my life. Well, at least not when talking about my hair. I was used to words like “gel” or “mousse” or “hair spray,” your basic meat and potatoes terminology of hair care.

For most of my life, I didn’t know much about hair products and thought they were all the same. I liked the Pert Plus commercials, so I used Pert Plus. Pantene Pro-V has vitamins? Cool, I’ll use that. Vidal Sassoon says if I don’t look good, he doesn’t look good. So naturally I wanted him to look good, so I used his products.

Yet, I always wondered why some people’s hair looked better than others. I never really thought that it had anything to do with the products they used. I grew up with straight hair that got rebellious at puberty. Now I live with a thick mane of frizz and ‘fro if not properly maintained with a short hair cut. And that’s when I started learning about “product.” Or specifically, when a woman who cut my hair asked me what “product” I was using. I thought she was crazy.

I didn’t realize there were balms, pomades, and a varied assortment of other stuff. So I tried a whole bunch, in search of the perfect hair accoutrement that would help my hair look cool but not get too sticky, or wear off in just a few hours. And I am certainly not a fan of the “wet” look that is a side effect of many gels. (My wife is convinced that my hair looks the same no matter what, but I notice!)

So it was my pleasure that the Lock & Mane team introduced me to Tough by John Allan. The label calls it a “Fortifying Styling Paste,” but to me it just equals hair styling awesomeness. What I like about this paste is that it sculpts your hair without being too sticky or stiff. For example, certain pomades cause your hair to become one big matted mess, and if you don’t get the perfect style within the first 10 seconds, it sets in and you’re screwed.

Fortunately, John Allan’s Tough is different. It works well with problem hair like mine, giving it the proverbial “muscle” to sculpt it in a way that makes me happy.

My wife tells me it also has enriched conditioners and extracts from Acai, Red Tea, and even Pomegranate to protect the scalp. So that’s good, too.

John Allan’s Tough has replaced my other hair products on my shelf. It’s a great product for any guy looking to show his hair who’s in charge.

So Fresh and So Clean

jantin_01Celebrity stylist Jonathan Antin shares a very important philosophy with Lock & Mane. He wants everyone to have a good hair day … all the time. That was what led the star of Bravo’s hit show, “Blow Out” to develop his own line of products from the purest highest quality ingredients. We caught up with Jonathan (who is constantly jetting around the world attending to very important hair) to get the low down on what makes his brand so darned special.

Lock & Mane: Tell us a little bit about why and how you developed your products?

Jonathan Antin: When starting my career as a hair stylist on magazine shoots and working with celebrities, I learned that the most important thing was to deliver great hair with great speed. I often mixed existing brands’ styling products hoping to create just a few products that could deliver lasting results. This is why I created Jonathan Product with the mantra, Simple Hair and How to Get There, always with the goal of making it easier for my clients to style their hair at home.  I found a fantastic lab to work with and that is how it all began.

L&M: What are the benefits of having vegan products and what were the challenges in making them?

JA: Vegan products are plant derived and do not contain any animal byproducts. Plant derived ingredients are more environmentally friendly since they are a renewable resource. Overall vegan products are gentler on the hair and scalp and have positive effects on our bodies and the environment. The biggest challenge is communicating that these products are just as luxurious and efficacious as other products on the market, and also better for your hair and the planet.

L&M: You have always stressed the importance of water for the hair? How did you discover that water and water purification made such a difference for hair?

beautywaterwhiteJA: Water quality in the U.S. varies geographically, but our water supply is usually tainted with things like chlorine and heavy metals. Most shampoos and conditioners on the market, made up of 80% water, use this water in their formulas. The result of using these products? Dry hair and skin, dull and faded hair color, and hair that is less soft and manageable than it could be. For these reasons, I spent years advising my clients to wash their hair with bottled water so that their hair would not be stripped by the impurities from their shower water.  Thanks to Jonathan Products, I don’t have to give that advice anymore. All of my products are formulated with Essential Water — water that is de-ionized, purified and infused with botanicals — and the result is pure, natural and gentle products. In addition, with the Beauty Water Shower Purification System you can now have bottle quality water in your shower.

L&M: Yes, yes, tell us a little bit about how your patented water purification system works.

JA: After I conquered controlling the quality of water inside the bottle, it was time to take things to the next level and control the water outside as well. To effectively filter chlorine and other impurities from shower water and protect hair and skin, we introduced the Jonathan Product Beauty Water Shower Purification System. It contains the highest grade of filter medium available on the market today, and after just one week of use, you will notice softer hair and skin. The exclusive, patented two-stage system changes ordinary shower water into pure, pH-balanced water that is free of hair-stripping, skin-damaging chemicals. It is the closest thing to showering in natural spring water. And easy to install!

dirtL&M: Every guy we know loves Dirt. Was it originally intended for men or did you create it for women and guys just commandeered it?

JA: I created Dirt for everyone. Hair left to its own devices can often be unruly or difficult to style. We have to counteract that, make hair do what we want it to do. When I was younger, I thought I had bad hair — thick, frizzy and curly. I used to wash my hair the night before because blow-drying was so difficult. I began to notice that my hair was easier to deal with the day after. When I became a stylist, I started to put product into clients’ hair if it was clean before I cut it. I also had clients ask me to style their hair to look like it does the “day after” they wash it. I always try to give my clients a simple process to achieve whatever look they want. So I decided to create a product that helped solve all these problems. I mixed five different types of products together and created my own formula, which I used in my salon and gave to my clients to use at home. Everyone loved it. I named it “Dirt” — it’s a clean way to help give hair the look and feel of slightly dirty hair.  Dirt helps tame the hair and make it feel like “the day after” — more moldable and pliable.

green_rootine_shampooL&M: Tell us about Green Rootine. Why did you create it and what sets it apart from your other products?

JA: Green Rootine is a collection of all-natural, purely-derived formulations designed to provide optimal hair health. I created this line because I wanted to give my clients a natural option for their hair care regimen. Green Rootine Shampoo, Conditioner, Silkening Crème and Dry Shampoo are gentle formulas free of synthetic chemicals, sulfates, parabens and petrochemicals — packed with vitamins that feed and heal the scalp. Green Rootine products are gentler on the scalp and hair, using essential oils from plants as preservatives and fragrances. Hair is left soft, shiny, smooth and manageable. What sets these products apart is that they are truly 100% natural, free of all chemicals and created using simple formulations. This is unusual in most hair care products today.

L&M: If you were a woman whose hair would you want to have?

JA: Halle Berry. I love when she has a great short haircut. That look is always picture perfect with just a little of my DIRT.
