Adventures in Hair Conditioning: Part II Terax Crema: A Love Affair

Monday, August 31st, 2009

crema-sm3Hey kids. Today’s blog post is dedicated to a cult favorite – Terax Crema Conditioner. Lock-lovers in the know are devoted to this luxurious moisturizing conditioner. As for us, we’re obsessed. In fact, we would bathe in this stuff if we could.  Here’s why: As you all know, we try out each and every product on the site – this L&M’er (with fine/normal hair) was initially nervous to try Crema because, very often, “ultra-moisturizing” conditioners will weigh hair down. There’s a fine line between moisturized, silky hair, and a flat, heavy, overly-conditioned ‘do. The goal is shiny-bouncy-healthy (‘a la Hayek, Aniston, Cruz), not dull-flat-90’s grunge.  We tried it right before a big event, so the pressure was on.  Terax’s Crema Conditioner left our hair smooth, soft (but not too soft – there was enough texture to style it), incredibly shiny, and it felt perfectly moisturized. It made our mane look incredibly healthy. While a small amount will do the trick (about the size of a quarter), you can use more for a deeper condition from root to tip. Love this one! Crema Foreva!

instyle-weddings-hairHere at Lock & Mane we want you to have luxurious locks every single day, but we realize that certain days are more important than others… job interview days, running into ex boyfriend days and, of course, your wedding day! That’s why L&M is partnering with InStyle Weddings for our exciting wedding hair contest.

We want to hear all about what inspired (or will inspire) your wedding day look, whether it be a romantic poem, a red carpet pic, a walk on the beach with your fiancé or your grandmother’s 1950’s coiffe. From now until September 1st, send us your inspirations (and feel free to include pics!) to jo@lockandmane.com.

The entry with the most inspired style will win a customized honeymoon hair kit, especially designed for your hair and vacation destination in mind. We will also feature a photo of the winner’s wedding “do” and an interview about prepping for her special day on our site! Get ready to be just a little bit famous.

We can’t wait to read your submissions!

Adventures in Hair Conditioning, Part I: Global Goddess Hair Treatment

shalini-coconut-hair-treatment

This product has gotten tons of press recently due to a mention in Lucky Magazine (one of our faves). Shalini Vadhera’s expertise is in skincare, but when her Global Goddess line launched this hair product, it became an instant sensation. The bestselling Coconut Amla Hair Treatment is a luxurious blend of Coconut oil, Amla (Indian Gooseberry – one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C), Henna, and Avocado, which rejuvenates and brings a natural shine and softness to your locks. Shalini tells us that this type of oil has been used by Indian women for ages, due to its nourishing properties and ability to add elasticity and shine. We just love these ancient beauty secrets brought to the modern woman!  It also smells fantastic (reminded us of a luxurious tropical vacation). Your hair will smell of soft coconut for about two days after the treatment. Delish!

Following the directions, we applied it to the hair from the roots to the ends – and waited 30 minutes. We thought the treatment would be messy and drippy, but it stayed put beautifully. From there it was shampoo, condition and style as per usual. The result was hair that was very super shiny and smooth, and felt incredibly soft.

This treatment is especially useful for those of us with coarse, thick hair. With this product in hand, I didn’t even need to use a smoothing serum, usually a must-have for troublesome frizzies and flyaways (especially in this awful summer humidity).

One last note on this great product: you can use it overnight for extra hair conditioning (although we would suggest sleeping with a shower bonnet if you do!), and it even doubles as a skin moisturizer!  Add this to the list of things we would take with us if we were ever stranded on a desert island.

P.S. Stay tuned to the L&M blog for an exclusive interview with Shalini Vadhera herself in the next few weeks. We can’t wait!

Klorane Dry Shampoo

Monday, August 17th, 2009
klorane_dry_shampoo_blog8Here’s a common dilemma: You spend the better part of the morning drying/ straightening/curling/smoothing/volumizing/ spraying your locks to get ready for the day ahead. You look beautiful!  (Well done!) Your day at work is slower than usual, so you decide to squeeze in an exercise class during lunch. You work your butt off, and emerge from said exercise class a tad sweaty (glistening, really, in a very attractive way). You hop in the shower, but query: do you wash your hair yet again?  It is clean, after all, only a bit damp at the roots…and it looked so good this morning! Can it be replicated in a rush in a gym locker room?  What to do. What to do.

How about Klorane’s Dry Shampoo? Made with softening, protective oat extract, it’s a great choice that allows you to freshen up your do without actually washing it. No need to lather, rinse, (or repeat of course) and spend any more time doing your hair. Klorane’s entire line is hypoallergenic and incredibly gentle, so it’s also a wonderful option for those with sensitive skin/scalps.

This product is a favorite among the L&M staff, and has been noted in a smorgasboard of fashion and beauty magazines, most recently InStyle (Rebecca Romijn is a fan – we would certainly categorize any new mom of twins as a woman “on-the-go”) and Vogue’s recent article on travel essentials. On that note, this is a great product for those of you who travel a lot, as we know from personal experience how one’s hair tends to “deflate” after a long flight . Trust us, this one does wonders in adding volume and texture.

P.S. Available in both aerosol and non-aerosol versions.

Philip B. Russian Amber Imperial Shampoo

Friday, August 14th, 2009

philip_b_russianamber_12ozYou may have heard of this product in the news recently (it was mentioned in Vogue, Lucky Magazine and In Style Hair). The Russian Amber Imperial Shampoo is a once-a-week treatment which revitalizes all hair types but is especially great for dry, colored, or chemically-treated hair. It looks and feels like honey but lathers beautifully, and, like all Philip B products, smells heavenly.

The treatment adds shine, softness and bounce to distressed follicles and just feels so decadent. This one’s definitely an indulgence but it’s a once-a-week treatment that’ll make a huge difference. Lucky Magazine’s August 2009 issue raved about this product, stating:

“A true miracle! This shampoo makes my hair – which is wavy and long – perfectly wavy as if styled endlessly by a $700-an-hour stylist, then volumized and texturized as if worked on with numerous styling products (despite no stylist, no blow dryer, no styling products)… My friend – whose hair is straighter and shorter – gets body, volume, and shine. Yet another friend – whose long hair tends to frizz as a result of overprocessing – gets smooth sleekness without flatness. Her small daughter noted, ‘My mom finally has pretty hair!’ Whatever your wish for your hair, the shampoo grants the wish.”

In between treatments, any clarifying or moisturizing shampoo will do just fine.
For extra conditioning after the Russian Imperial, try the Katira Hair Masque, a gentle deep conditioning treatment that uses pure Katira extract to fill in weak and damaged spots in the hair cuticle for added smoothness and softness (but leaves no residue). We also recommend Phil’s Light Weight Deep Conditioning Crème Rinse, which is especially great for those with fine or limp locks.

See the video below for a demonstration by Mr. B himself.
